Australian First Aid Success Stories
There’s no doubt about it, accredited first aid training saves lives by equipping everyday people with the skills to respond to medical emergencies calmly and effectively. The following story, posted on ABC online, illustrates the life-saving impact of knowing how to provide effective CPR.
An Aussie Exchange Student in the U.S.
James Downie, an Australian exchange student, recently made headlines for his heroic actions on a basketball court. Studying at Winston-Salem Christian School in North Carolina on a two-year basketball scholarship, James faced a critical situation during a gym session last year. He was alerted by a distraught teammate that another student was in dire need of help.
James, an 18-year-old from Scarborough, New South Wales, recalled feeling overwhelmed as he rushed to the scene, where he found his fellow student, DeJohn (DJ) Blunt, unconscious and in a serious condition on the court.
Amidst the chaos and panic, James quickly assessed DJ’s symptoms, suspecting a seizure due to DJ’s locked jaw and signs of a head injury. Displaying remarkable composure, James, who aspires to be a professional basketball player, began administering CPR to DJ, successfully reviving him after a round and a half of chest compressions and mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.
Despite his initial relief, James faced a harrowing moment when DJ required CPR again as his condition worsened. On a second attempt, James felt DJ pushing air back, signalling his revival. However, the situation escalated when a third round of CPR became necessary. Throughout this ordeal, James remained focused, encouraging DJ with reassuring words about seeing his family again.
Their Training in CPR Made the Difference
James credited his success to the annual first aid and CPR training he received in Australia, while Polish student and teammate Szymon Koszyca, who initially started the chest compressions, commented, “In Poland, every kid at every school has lessons in CPR, so I think it should be an international thing.” This incident led to a proposal for mandatory CPR training at their school, which was promptly agreed upon by the principal.
A Happy Ending Thanks to Quick and Effective First Aid
The story culminates with a heartwarming hospital visit, where DJ, recovering from cardiac arrest due to an undiagnosed heart condition, simply thanked James, who humbly replied, “No problem, anytime.” This incident showcases the importance of accredited CPR training and the clear thinking and confidence it imparts to those who receive it.
Can First Aid Training Help You Stay Composed in a Crisis?
You might still wonder if first aid training is truly effective during emergencies or if James is just naturally calm under pressure. While James is certainly someone you’d want in an emergency, here’s another real-world example from Melbourne, Australia, that showcases the value of certified first aid training.
Shaun’s Heroic Act in Melbourne
After wrapping up his workday, Shaun heard a strange noise coming from another room. When Nicole didn’t respond to his calls, he rushed to find her and discovered her unconscious on the floor, suffering from cardiac arrest.
Relying on his first aid training, Shaun immediately checked for breathing and a pulse, finding neither. He quickly dialed emergency services, putting his phone on speaker mode as he commenced CPR. Shaun persevered with his resuscitation efforts until paramedics arrived just three minutes later. Nicole was rushed to the hospital, where she made a full recovery.
First Aid Training Proves Its Worth Again
A paramedic later acknowledged Shaun’s prompt and effective actions, crediting them with saving Nicole’s life. Shaun was awarded a certificate of commendation for his efforts. This incident once again underscores the critical importance of first aid and CPR training in managing life-threatening situations.
Two Fathers Use CPR to Save 12-Year-Old Boy at a Pool Party
This true story was reported in the Daily Telegraph online:
Every time Jeremy Nelson and Rachel Miles hold their son Xavier, they are filled with gratitude towards the two fathers who saved their 12-year-old with CPR during a cardiac arrest at a party. Even though only a third of Aussie parents know CPR, Xavier was fortunate to have two skilled dads nearby during his crisis.
The incident happened at a friend’s party. After getting out of the pool, Xavier suddenly lay down and ceased breathing. The emergency took place at Chris Kirkwood’s home, where Mark Colston was present to collect his son Leo.
Both men saw Xavier’s distress. Mark Colston, 48, quickly sprang into action. Finding Xavier unresponsive and without a heartbeat, he began mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, while Chris called for an ambulance and then started chest compressions.
Colston, who had taken two first aid courses including CPR, felt a mix of panic and confidence in his ability to manage the situation. Chris, familiar with CPR from his scouting days, had only practiced on dummies but never on a child. Fueled by adrenaline, they worked together to save Xavier, performing CPR for 11 minutes until paramedics arrived.
Jeremy Nelson describes the intense scene, recalling how time seemed to freeze as helicopters and pediatric doctors rushed in to stabilise his son. It took over an hour to stabilise Xavier, but the CPR provided crucial blood flow and oxygen to his brain.
Two months later, Xavier made a full recovery, although the cause of his cardiac arrest remains unknown. He now has a defibrillator implant to prevent future incidents. Jeremy Nelson acknowledges the crucial role of CPR in saving his son’s life, expressing immense gratitude for those who take the time to learn these life-saving skills.
